Yard signs.
We’ve all seen them, whether they were in a neighbor’s yard, at a golf tournament, or outside a business. And, last year, we saw a plethora to celebrate the graduates’ achievements.
What’s the most memorable yard sign you’ve seen? The sign I thought of almost immediately was one I saw in someone’s yard during one of my evening walks this past election season. It was small, but accomplished its purpose. It said “Betty White 2020. Keep America golden.”
I laughed out loud. Now THAT was my kind of political yard sign! I of course had to snap a picture and send it to friends and family.
Regardless of what came to your mind, yard signs fulfill a specific purpose. In this blog post, we’ll go over the in’s and out’s of yard signs. Consider this to be the ultimate guide to yard signs! Let’s get started.
How are yard signs made?
A variety of ways to create yard signs exist. At Classic Sign Services, we complete each step of the process in-house.
We use corrugated plastic, or “coroplast” for short, as the base of the sign. The material has a flat, sheer finish, as well as a fluted interior that can be seen on the sides. It’s also water resistant.
The fluted interior keeps the sign faces sturdy and durable. It also allows easy install of stakes, the metal piece that goes into the ground.
Now that we’ve gone over the materials used, let’s discuss the manufacturing process.
We have a large (or wide) format printer in our shop. It can print material up to eight feet wide. It’s not your typical printer!
When we digitally print yard signs, we can fit up to five pieces of coroplast at a time. Our production extraordinaire takes your design and works his magic to make it repeat five times over for the ultimate result.
(Side note: if you want to see this process, check out our social channels! We post brief videos from time to time.)
It prints in full-color, where shades of grey and white are crisp, and colors are vibrant and eye-catching.
Once the printing is complete, we provide you with stakes, and you’re all set to pick them up! It’s both easy and affordable.
What are the primary uses of yard signs?
Yard signs are super versatile. They promote a variety of causes, and, when used correctly, can be quite effective.
So, a short answer to that question is: to promote any event or cause!
But, let’s get into the long version of the answer.
As I’ve previously mentioned, yard signs can be used to promote a politician or support a proposition. This past voting season made history for many reasons, and I saw a ton of yard signs in support of each candidate.
Another use of yard signs is for grand openings. When a business first opens, they want to spread the word and get people excited. These signs most likely have arrows pointing the way, along with the date of the opening.
One of the most popular usages of yard signs is in real estate. It is absolutely possible to search for open houses near you online through a variety of sites, but the yard signs in the front yards let passersby know the homes are on the market. Plus, they serve as advertising for the real estate agent involved in the process.

The pandemic has brought about many new ways of living life. From social distancing to wearing masks, all of our lives have been altered in some way. It has also changed the way we celebrate our loved ones. Yard signs are now used to celebrate birthdays and graduates. They serve as a fun surprise and can be personalized to make their day and accomplishments that much sweeter!
(Another fun way to celebrate birthdays is with individually cut-out letters. Yes, we can do those too!)
What’s a golf tournament without wayfinding signs? At most tournaments, each hole is sponsored by a business (displayed on a yard sign), and signs with arrows are lined throughout the course to help players get from one hole to the next. They also promote the event in general.
As you can see, there are several uses for yard signs. I just included the most obvious and popular ones. There are new uses being introduced all the time!
Are yard signs effective?
I’m going to answer this question by asking a bunch of questions. Although it might not be the best way to answer a question, each one will speak for themselves.
Have you sold or purchased your home and placed one out front? Did seeing the sign in someone’s yard entice you to visit their open house?
Have you celebrated a graduate or birthday with a sign?
Have you played in a golf tournament and used them as a frame of reference for getting to each hole?
Did you research a proposition after seeing a yard sign?
Did you place a candidate’s yard sign in your lawn, or have you seen them in your neighbor’s yard?
Have you attended a grand opening or tried a new ice cream joint after seeing a sign advertising it?
That’s it. That’s my answer.
Now that we’ve discussed all aspects of yard signs in our ultimate guide, let’s move forward.
